报告人简介:

Dr. Joachim Frank is a scientist with a wide range of scientific interests and accomplishments in structural molecular biology. His scientific contributions to the field of biological three-dimensional electron microscopy have placed him at the international forefront. He is one of the pioneers in three-dimensional electron microscopy of macromolecular assemblies. He developed “single particle analysis” approach in three-dimensional electron microscopy and used this approach to “see” molecular machinery in action, which have become a powerful approach in structural molecular biology.

Dr. Frank has received numerous honors throughout his distinguished career, including the Elizabeth Roberts Cole Award of the Biophysical Society (1996); Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator Award (1998); Recipient of the 2000-01 University at Albany Award for Excellence in Research (2001); Scientific Merit Award, as “Scientist of the Fourth Quarter Century” by the New York State Department of Health (2001); Recognized as “Distinguished Scientist for Biological Sciences for 2003” by the Microscopy Society of America (2003); Chancellor’s Research Recognition Award from the University at Albany, SUNY (2003); Named Wadsworth Distinguished Scientist in Structural Biology (2006); George E. Palade Distinguished Lecture and Gold Medal (with Ada Yonath and Thomas Steitz), Wayne State University (2008). Dr. Frank was elected Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2006), Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology (2006), and Member of the National Academy of Sciences (2006).

Dr. Frank has published more than 300 journal articles, 20 book chapters, and 5 books. He serves as distinguished reviewers for many top scientific journals, including Nature, Science and Cell. He also organized many international symposiums and workshops in biological three-dimensional electron microscopy, and taught and trained hundred of PhD students and postdoctors, many of them have become the leading scientists in biological three-dimensional electron microscopy.

Dr. Frank is the professor of Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons and Professor of Department of Biological Sciences, Columbia University.
