The Ben Mamoun Lab at Yale University focuses on understanding how pathogens import and utilize host nutrients for development, differentiation, and virulence. They focus on two important human diseases, malaria and babesiosis caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Plasmodium and Babesia, respectively. The lecture will be divided into two part: First, Prof. Ben Mamoun will describe studies that link metabolism of phospholipids to malaria development and pathogenesis. Specifically, he will present biochemical, genetic and structural data on an important lipid metabolic enzyme and efforts to target it for the development of new classes of antimicrobials. Second, Prof. Ben Mamoun will present a recent discovery in the lab of a novel mechanism by which Babesia parasites export proteins to the host, and strategies developed to discover new antiparasitic drugs.
