Staffan Stromblad, Ph.D., is a Professor of Clinical molecular biology at the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition. Clinical molecular biology is the study of clinical processes at molecular level. Staffan Str?mblad's research is mainly focused on cancer and the interface between cancer cells and surrounding tissue. This includes the study of cell migration, i.e. how they move about, which is a central process in the spread of cancer and the development of secondary tumors.
Staffan Str?mblad has developed a new method for this purpose, systems microscopy, which makes it possible to create mathematical models of dynamic cell processes, right down to molecular level. Staffan Str?mblad is the Coordinator of the European Union-FP7-Systems Microscopy Network of Excellence and the Vice director of the Karolinska Institute’s Breast Cancer Theme Center (BRECT)
Schematic work-flow of Systems Microscopy. Systems Microscopy can be viewed as Systems biology based on quantitative microscopic imaging data. Experiments are performed and recorded by live cell imaging, quantitative multiparametric data is extracted simultaneously from multiple scales, analyzed in an integrated fashion by advanced multivariate statistics and modeled mathematically. Predictive models are then tested experimentally, thereby closing the iterative systems biology circle.
