Dr. St George-Hyslop is Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Neurology at the University of Toronto and Professor of Experimental Neuroscience in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Cambridge, He received his M.D. from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa, and the F.R.C.P.(C) in Internal Medicine and in Neurology from the Royal College of Physicians of Canada. He conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Toronto and at Harvard Medical School . Dr. St. George-Hyslop was Assistant Physician in the Departments of Neurology and Genetics at Massachusetts General Hospital . He joined the University of Toronto in 2003 and has held the rank of University Professor since 2007.
Dr. St George-Hyslop has worked on the molecular genetics, molecular biology and cell biology of several neurodegenerative diseases including, most notably, Alzheimer Disease. He has cloned four different genes associated with Alzheimer Disease and worked out some of the early events in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer Disease. Recently he has developed a small, drug like molecule to inhibit the toxic aggregation of amyloid,which is currently in clinical trials.
Honors and Awards:Dr. St George-Hyslop’s honors include the Francis A. McNaughton Prize from the Canadian Neurologic Society, Potamkin Prize from the American Academy of Neurology and the Award for Medical Research from the Metropolitan Life Foundation. He was elected as a Medical Research Council of Canada Scholar in 1991 and Distinguished Scientist in 2000. He received the Gold Medal in Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians of Canada in 1994 and the Michael Smith Award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research in 1997. In 2004, he was awarded the Oon Prize in Medicine from the University of Cambridge .
Dr. St George-Hyslop is a Foreign Member of the Institute of Medicine of the US National Academies of Science, a Fellow of the Royal Society, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences , a Howard Hughes International Scholar and a Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow.
